On May 15th, the 2016 International Young Architects Design Competition of Major Cultural Facilities in Shanghai finished finally and the results settled after three months. The original work of CROX designer team called Hill of Pudong won the third prize of Shanghai Museum East Building group.
The 2016 International Young Architects Design Competition of Major Cultural Facilities in Shanghai was officially launched in February 23rd this year. The competition was sponsored by the Pudong New Area People's Government with the theme of "Culture Enlightens the City", aiming to absorb the wisdom of young architects for the urban construction in Shanghai.
The competition was divided into three groups: Shanghai Library East Building group, Shanghai Museum East Building group and Shanghai Opera House group. CROX designer team participated in the design works selection of Shanghai Museum East Building group and the work "Hill of Pudong" eventually won the third prize among 129 entries.
"Hill of Pudong" starts from the concept of engaging with nature, which blends in with the spirit of traditional Chinese poetry, painting and landscape gardens, for the purpose of making people get away from the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves into the splendid culture and history. Strategically, the museum extends horizontally to alleviate the heaviness of a large-scale modern architecture through the ups and downs of natural landscape. The continuous green roof is like the orogeny in nature. Voids of atriums are inserted thoughtfully to blur the boundary of inside and outside. The layering of spaces brought by lights and shadows allows people to relax and meditate in it.
It is reported that the competition attracted 1787 groups of designers from China, Japan, the United States, Canada, France and other countries and regions, eventually receiving 450 entries. Participants are under the age of 45 years old.
